SHTF & The Lee Enfield Rifle

Many argue that a rifle dedicated to emergencies must be a modern combat platform capable of semi-auto fire. I agree that a semi-auto would be advantageous in situations requiring covering fire for advance or retreat. A good sporter lee enfield can be obtained for $250 and is capable of fast shooting and quick reloads. Not as fast as a gas gun but still fast. If you're on a budget and want a reliable MILSPEC beater SHTF rifle then don't discount the lee enfield rifle.

Most people are not combat trained soldiers and a more simplistic, easy to maintain, cost effective and reliable platform may be more suitable.

The lee enfield provides people with a fast repeating bolt action in a commercially available caliber, it has numerous adaptations for the field, it is fun and is great for grooming new shooters and has excellent hand loading possibilities. If the SHTF phenomenon is something you are interested in then hand loading ammunition is your next step to long term economical shooting, practice, security & sustainability.

Also discussed in this video are reduced loads for small game, teaching kids how to shoot and the 'Hammond Game Getter' which is commonly known as a subcaliber adapter, subcaliber insert, cartridge adapter and gallery cartridge. The purpose of the Hammond Game Getter is to convert your big-game rifle into a low-power rifle ideal for targets, birds, and small game at close range with minimum noise.

Shooting Clinic for Hunters

Give me your feedback on this? What would you like to see in a clinic like this? I'd like to host a Google+ Hangout and facilitate a discussion along these lines. Let me know if you would like to attend? Cheers RC....

Wilderness Hunting Adventure

An executive summary of our last hunting expedition. Lots of learning, fun and many good memories were procured. I'm blessed & honoured to have Tudenom and Yodad along on this trip. Without them this adventure would not have been anywhere near as much fun and memorable. Warm salutations to all of you and we hope you enjoy this video. All my best RC.

Wilderness Loadout and Equipment Considerations

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: In this video I describe my field kit. There is nothing particularly special about what I wear and why I wear it. It is simply a system that I have evolved over time to meet my 24 - 48 hour pack requirements. Keeping kit modular and lightweight is important to me. One needs to strike a balance between field tools, shelter and sustenance. I tend to lean towards tools because with them I can make my own shelter using native materials & recruit my own food. Tools are not much use if you don't know how to apply them so please note that this video is simply dedicated to identifying kit and tools. Don't leave home without them :)

How does the Affordable Care Act affect US citizens?

Dave breaks down the possible effects of President Obama's signature healthcare legislation. http://daveramsey.com/show

I find it refreshing to hear a perspective that cuts through the nebulous rhetoric we are hearing about 'Obamacare".

The Enemy Within

The Great Dictator is a 1940 American comedy-drama film starring, written, produced, scored, and directed by Charlie Chaplin, following the tradition of many of his other films. Having been the only Hollywood filmmaker to continue to make silent films well into the period of sound films, this was Chaplin's first true talking picture as well as his most commercially successful film.

At the time of its first release, the United States was still formally at peace with Nazi Germany. Chaplin's film advanced a stirring, controversial condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini's fascism, antisemitism, and the Nazis, whom he mocks in the film as "machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts".

This speech means as much today as it did in 1940 however today the enemy is much closer to home.

LVE Novosibirsk Cartridge Plant

A short Riflechair review of this Russian 7.62X54R 203gr hunting ammunition.

Mad Minute - The world record is a lie

In this video I describe why I believe Sergeant Instructor Alfred Snoxall's world record 'Mad Minute' of 38 (NOT 36)  bulls-eyes on a 12" target at 300 yards in 60 seconds is a LIE. Video contents may offend some viewers. Yes that is a moose fang around my neck.

WARNE Quick Detach QD Rings / CZ 550 Lux 9.3X62

Testing WARNE Quick Detach QD  Rings on the CZ-550 Lux chambered in 9.3X62.

A wicked combination!

You may find this video interesting, especially if you have been informed that these rings hold a true zero after removing the optical sight and re-attaching. Certainly I found the result of this test interesting and my expectations have changed. Having said that you never know the answers to these questions until you test your gear under simulated conditions.

2.5 minutes in the life of Riflechair

Working on the Coast of North West British Columbia

Norinco Ammo Sucks?

Testing an Accuracy International magazine for function in a Remington Tac 700 in 308 Win. So I dumped ten rounds down range not really paying any attention or worried about marksmanship. Using crappy Norinco steel cased green box 148gr FMJBT. Then I looked at the target.

Tikka T3 Lite Battue 300 WSM Pro's and Con's

There are compromises made when you choose a short barrel lightweight rifle chambered in magnum calibres. This Battue has a 20" barrel and is chambered in 300 WSM. As such there is an associated loss in velocity and increase in felt recoil. This video discusses those pro's and con's of the Tikka T3 Lite Battue.  After some reflection I think this rifle should really be dedicated to establishing zeroes with light to moderate weight bullets. 150gr to 168gr projectiles of good quality that can be driven HARD may be best suited for this rifle. The 200gr bullets tested in this video are likely not appropriate for this little fire-cracker. I have more work to do with this rifle and I'm going to start with some 150gr BARNES TTSX bullets.

Uncha Lake - British Columbia

To find Uncha Lake
1. Go to Burns Lake (Hwy 16)
2. Turn South onto Hwy 35 until you arrive at Francois Lake
3. Proceed to the Francois Lake Ferry (all inland ferries in BC are free of charge)
4. As soon as you exit the ferry turn east onto Uncha Lake Road

15 minutes later you're there.
You also have Binta Lake, Takysie Lake and a whole lot more to explore - all in close proximity to one another.

Enjoy!

Mosin Nagant Sniper & the Austere Rifle Range

The trusty M91/30 Mosin Nagant sniper head out to the bush to do some shooting at intermediate ranges. What follows is a short dialogue on a few things we should all consider when shooting on an austere range.

The rifle is an original 1943 Izhevsk PU sniper and definitely has seen Soviet military service. Thankfully the bore condition is NRA very good with bright & shiny lands and grooves. She is by far one of the hardiest, accurate fun-to-shoot ex-service rifles I've ever had the pleasure to shoot...

HAPPY CANADA DAY - JULY 1ST 2013!!!!

KELTEC SU16F ASSESSMENT

I am not convinced that these rifles are so wonderful.

Bear Awareness & Defense Considerations

For your Consideration...

How to Zero the Lee Enfield Rifle

This is not about practicing the arts of black magic.
It is about the original conventions of zeroing your lee enfield.
The original convention still applies if you are utilizing ammunition calibrated to Mk VII specifications and are using imperial ranges.

If I were to build the new Canadian Ranger Rifle

If I were to build the new Canadian Ranger Rifle I would do so as follows however, I would modify the platform I present to you in this video in three ways:
1. Barrel profile would be reduced from heavy to medium heavy
2. Barrel length would be increased from 20" to 21.75"
3. Fixed front sight installed and a Lyman type vernier adjustable aperture receiver sight installed (removable).

I compare the philosophy of use of the new Ranger Rifle to that of the Ex-Soviet Com Bloc sniping rifles used from WW2 to modern day. 'Area shooting' VS 'Surgical Precision Shooting' philosophy of use.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
  • The beginning of the video goes into some detail around the Mosin Nagant model 91/30 PU Sniper, quality assessment and general surplus rifle investment advice;
  • The video then transitions to a comparative analysis of the PU Sniper and the proposed new Canadian Ranger rifle might look like and a discussion around philosophy of use;
  • The end of the rifle goes back to the PU Sniper as the author tries not to embarass himself shooting at an 8" gong at 200m in the standing position. Ammunition used in the PU Sniper is Czech Sellier & Bellot surplus 148gr corrosive ammunition.
The video is viewable in HIGH DEFINITION 1080P
